Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman downplayed the feasibility of space-based data centers, stating they are far from reality. This comes as the demand for computing power surges due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). The current limitations in launching equipment and the associated costs render the concept uneconomical for the foreseeable future.

Garman's comments at the Cisco AI Summit in San Francisco reflect the practical challenges. While some startups and even Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin are exploring the idea, the difficulties of sending servers and other equipment into orbit remain significant. The cost of space launches is currently prohibitive.

The idea of orbital data centers emerged as a potential solution to address the growing computing needs and cooling concerns of terrestrial facilities. The need for more powerful and efficient data centers is driven by the rapid expansion of AI and its associated processing requirements.

Looking ahead, the focus remains on improving the efficiency and capacity of existing land-based data centers, and exploring alternative solutions to cooling. The scalability and economic viability of space-based data centers will depend on advancements in rocket technology and the cost of space travel.
