Anthropic Investors Push Pentagon AI Deal Amid Tensions

Some Anthropic investors are scrambling to resolve a standoff with the Pentagon over AI safeguards, fearing the dispute could devastate the company's business, sources told Reuters. CEO Dario Amodei has discussed the matter with major investors including Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, while venture firms like Lightspeed and Iconiq have also reached out to Anthropic executives.

Investors are contacting Trump administration contacts to ease tensions and avoid a ban on Anthropic's AI from Pentagon contractors. The dispute centers on Anthropic's refusal to remove bans on using its Claude AI for autonomous weapons and mass surveillance, despite Pentagon pressure to adopt an all-lawful use clause. The company had previously secured a classified supply deal with the Defense Department through Amazon's cloud services.

Some investors expressed frustration that Amodei antagonized rather than cultivated Pentagon relationships, calling it "an ego and diplomacy problem." The clash represents a broader debate over how much control AI companies can maintain over their technology. OpenAI announced its own classified Pentagon deal Friday, suggesting Anthropic should not be labeled a risk to the department. The outcome could significantly impact Anthropic's funding prospects and its position in the competitive AI market.
