A new nationwide study comparing fast food burgers and fries by cost per ounce reveals surprising value leaders in the competitive quick-service restaurant market. Whataburger's classic Whataburger emerges as the best beef value, while Shake Shack's regular fries top the value rankings for potato sides.

NetCredit analyzed single-patty cheeseburgers from 14 popular chains, calculating price per ounce of beef after normalizing regional pricing variations. Despite having a higher menu price than many competitors, Whataburger's $5.92 Whataburger delivers the best value at $1.66 per ounce of beef. The study found McDonald's cheeseburger at $2.02 offers the second-best beef value, while Shake Shack's $6.88 cheeseburger ranks seventh despite its premium positioning.

The same methodology applied to medium/regular French fries produced equally surprising results. Shake Shack's $2.49 regular fries provide the best value at $0.40 per ounce, followed by Culver's medium fries at $0.50 per ounce. Notably, none of the most famous fast food chains cracked the top five for fry value, with McDonald's medium fries ranking eighth at $0.89 per ounce.
