Utah Reservoir Reaches Full Capacity After Heavy Rainfall

Gunlock Reservoir in Utah reached 100% capacity in early February, surprising locals who had seen it as an empty mud hole just months earlier. Despite historically low snowpack across the state, several southern Utah reservoirs are averaging about 41% capacity, with Gunlock exceeding expectations.

Brock Belnap, associate general manager of the Washington County Water Conservancy District, credited a series of "great rainstorms" during the fall for the unexpected water levels. Other district reservoirs like Sand Hollow and Quail Creek are about 73% full, providing relief as officials prepare for the upcoming summer. Belnap expressed confidence in the region's infrastructure to handle dry conditions.

The development comes amid ongoing concerns about snowpack levels, which provide about 95% of Utah's water supply. While the rainstorms have saturated soil, potentially improving spring runoff efficiency, water managers remain cautious about long-term sustainability. Similar reservoir level increases have brought relief to other areas, including Utah Lake and Big Bear Lake in California.
