A new WalletHub study reveals Massachusetts as the most educated state in America, while West Virginia ranks last in educational attainment and quality. The analysis examined 18 metrics across all 50 states, measuring both the percentage of adults with degrees and the quality of education systems. Educational attainment proved strongest in high-income states, where property tax funding supports better schools.

Massachusetts leads with over 47% of adults holding bachelor's degrees and 22% with graduate degrees. The state boasts elite institutions like Harvard University and MIT, ranking second in university quality and first in K-12 performance. Vermont follows closely with 95% high school completion rates, while Maryland offers free community college programs that boost graduate degree attainment to second-highest nationally.

The study highlights a crucial gap between education quality and attainment. Rhode Island ranks second in education quality but only 21st in attainment, while Colorado shows the opposite pattern. Lower-ranked states like West Virginia struggle with both metrics, reflecting broader economic challenges. The findings underscore how educational opportunities remain deeply tied to geographic and economic factors, with high-earning states consistently outperforming their lower-income counterparts.
