U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Laredo, Texas intercepted three red-lored parrots hidden in a vehicle attempting to cross from Mexico. Two suspects face fines or imprisonment under federal wildlife protection laws. The birds, native to Central and South America, were concealed in personal belongings at the U.S.-Mexico border checkpoint.

While not endangered, red-lored parrots face declining populations and are protected under U.S. regulations. Alberto Flores, Laredo Port Director, warned that smuggled birds often carry diseases threatening native wildlife and agricultural systems. Invasive species can disrupt ecosystems by competing for resources or introducing pests – risks that could trigger multimillion-dollar crop losses or environmental damage.

The seized parrots were transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for care. This bust highlights intensified border screening for biological threats alongside traditional drug and weapon interdictions. Wildlife trafficking remains a $23 billion global illicit trade, per UN estimates, with porous borders enabling ecological and economic vulnerabilities.
