Ukraine is collaborating with SpaceX to prevent Russia from utilizing the Starlink internet system for guiding drones. This follows reports of Starlink terminals being found on long-range Russian drones involved in attacks within Ukraine. Kyiv is seeking to prevent the technology from being used for military purposes.

Ukraine's Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, expressed gratitude to SpaceX's Gwynne Shotwell and Elon Musk for their prompt response. The country relies heavily on Starlink for battlefield communication and drone operations due to its stable connection and resistance to signal jamming. The use of Starlink by Russia raises serious concerns.

Reports indicate Russia may have been using Starlink-equipped Shahed drones since September 2024. One Ukrainian official noted "hundreds" of instances of Russian drones using Starlink. The challenge lies in the difficulty of suppressing Starlink signals via electronic warfare.

SpaceX has stated it does not sell or ship Starlink to Russia. However, the discovery of the terminals raises questions about how Russia is acquiring the technology and how effectively it can be blocked. This is a critical development in the ongoing conflict.
