President Trump's proposed 90,000-square-foot White House ballroom is far too large and threatens the historic integrity of the presidential residence, according to architect David Scott Parker. The ballroom alone would occupy 22,000 square feet for just 1,000 guests, exceeding industry standards by nearly 50%. Parker's critique comes as federal agencies prepare to vote on the controversial project.

Parker, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, argues the massive addition would permanently alter America's most recognizable historic home. His analysis shows the ballroom could be reduced to 15,000 square feet while still meeting needs, based on standard 15-square-foot-per-person calculations. The project also includes a 4,000-square-foot porch that doesn't comply with ADA requirements and provides no direct interior access.

The addition's sheer scale has raised alarms since its announcement. At nearly twice the size of the existing White House, critics worry it would overwhelm the mansion and disrupt the carefully planned sightlines along Pennsylvania Avenue between the White House and Capitol. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has filed a lawsuit seeking to halt construction until proper approvals and public comment are obtained.
