President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of the $4.7 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, citing unfair treatment by Canada. In a social media post, Trump claimed Canada will own both sides of the bridge and demanded compensation for what he called decades of unfair treatment.

The bridge, named after Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe, has been under construction since 2018 and is nearing completion. The Canada-Michigan Crossing Agreement stipulates that Canada will pay for the bridge and use toll funds over 30 years for reimbursement. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently declared it will serve as an official port of entry, saving travelers $12.7 million annually by reducing congestion.

Canadian officials have condemned Trump's threat as irrational. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens called the post 'insane' and expressed disappointment that the bridge opening won't be celebrated as a bilateral achievement. The threat comes amid escalating tensions between Trump and Canada, including disputes over trade, tariffs, and Trump's suggestion that Canada should become the 51st state.
