A CNN poll conducted during Donald Trump's State of the Union address revealed that two-thirds of the audience gave a somewhat favorable reaction to his speech, with 38% rating it extremely positive. The audience leaned Republican by 13 percentage points, creating a more receptive environment than the general public.

Despite the friendly crowd, Trump faced criticism on key issues. A significant 45% of viewers said he devoted too little attention to the cost of living, while 40% expressed no confidence that he would make things more affordable. The poll also showed viewers were evenly split on his tariff policies.

On other policy areas, Trump performed better. His economic and immigration strategies received stronger approval, with 62% agreeing they align with national interests. The address did boost his standing somewhat - approval for his policies benefiting the nation rose from 54% to 64% after the speech. However, with Trump's approval rating at just 36% in a pre-speech CNN poll, the SOTU address is unlikely to significantly shift broader public opinion given the Republican-skewed audience.
