A stretch of Interstate 45 through Houston, Texas, has been identified as the deadliest 10-mile segment in the United States. The section between exits 49B and 60A saw 142 crashes and 148 deaths over a 20-year period analyzed by personal injury lawyers at Elk & Elk and data visualization agency 1Point21 Interactive.

While roads like California's Dead Man's Curve and Florida's 'Cocaine Lane' have deadly reputations, the Houston segment of I-45 averaged 7.7 fatal crashes annually. The study found seven of the ten deadliest 10-mile segments nationwide were in Texas, with five located in Dallas alone. The entire 286-mile highway has seen 56.5 fatal accidents per 100 miles, according to a separate study by insurance agency Budget Direct.

Houston officials have launched the North Houston Highway Improvement Project, a $9 billion initiative begun in 2002 to address the deadly corridor. The project aims to expand express lanes, reroute the highway closer to downtown, and accommodate high-occupancy and autonomous vehicles. Despite these efforts, the improvements aren't expected to be completed until 2038, leaving the dangerous stretch active for years to come.
