Texas Governor Race: Hinojosa Targets Rising Living Costs

Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa is mounting a challenge to Republican incumbent Greg Abbott by focusing on the rising cost of living for Texas families. In a recent news release, Hinojosa criticized Abbott's economic policies, arguing they primarily benefit wealthy and well-connected Texans while working families struggle with increasing expenses.

Hinojosa highlighted what she calls the "Abbott Corruption Tax," noting that over 4.1 million Texans - more than half of the state's renters - now spend over 30% of their income on rent. She attributes the spike in housing and utility bills to market manipulation by corporations and argues that homeownership has become increasingly unattainable for first-time buyers after nearly 12 years of Abbott's leadership.

The Austin American-Statesman recently endorsed Hinojosa, describing her as "the champion Democrats need" at a time when Texas' economic success has become disconnected from the well-being of many residents. The editorial board praised her focus on issues that transcend partisan divisions, emphasizing that her priorities would broadly benefit Texans regardless of geography or political affiliation.
