Australian health authorities are warning about a dramatic rise in tattoo-associated uveitis, a rare condition that can cause permanent blindness. Forty cases have been diagnosed in Australia, doubling the global total recorded in 2010, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Nelize Pretorius experienced the alarming symptoms firsthand when her vision became blurry, first in one eye and then the other. Initially suspecting conjunctivitis, she received negative test results as her sight rapidly deteriorated. The condition results from a presumed immune reaction to tattoo ink, with black ink identified as the primary culprit in most inflammation cases, according to research published in Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.

Treatment can be expensive and ongoing, with some patients requiring immunosuppression. Ophthalmologist Josephine Richards noted the cause remains poorly understood, stating that the eye appears to be caught in the immune system's crossfire. While Pretorius received timely diagnosis and treatment, other patients have permanently lost their vision, highlighting the serious risks associated with what many consider a routine cosmetic procedure.
