Target Faces Protests Over Immigration Stance in Minnesota

Activists staged protests at over two dozen Target stores nationwide Wednesday, demanding the retailer take a public stand against the Trump administration's immigration crackdown in Minnesota. The demonstrations, organized by ICE Out Minnesota, included sit-ins and other actions planned for a full week at locations from Minneapolis to San Diego.

Target's headquarters in Minneapolis has become a focal point after federal officers killed two residents who participated in anti-ICE protests last month. CEO Michael Fiddelke, who took over February 2, has faced criticism for not publicly opposing the immigration enforcement activities. The protests follow Target's 2023 decision to roll back diversity initiatives, which sparked boycotts from progressive customers.

Retail analyst Neil Saunders noted the protests represent another distraction for Target, which is already struggling with sales malaise and complaints about disheveled stores. A separate coalition of Mennonite congregations organized roughly a dozen demonstrations across the country, singing gospel songs and urging Target to call Congress to defund Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The negative attention comes as Target navigates both political pressure and business challenges in its home state.
