Texas transportation officials have launched two disruptive highway projects along the I-69 corridor, including a seven-month closure affecting Brownsville's main commercial artery. Crews will resurface eight miles of I-69E through August 2026, disrupting six lanes near Sunrise Mall and downtown during overnight work from 9 PM to 6 AM.

A separate two-week project starting February 9 will install safety fencing along a 3-mile stretch of I-69C north of Edinburg. This critical commercial route through Hidalgo County handles all passenger and freight traffic entering the Rio Grande Valley, with lane closures scheduled daytime hours.

The $1.2 billion I-69 corridor expansion aims to better connect the Valley to national trade routes. Current bottlenecks cost regional businesses an estimated $45 million annually in delayed shipments. TxDOT's phased construction approach seeks to minimize disruptions to an area where 85% of Mexico-bound cargo enters the U.S.
