Snake cannibalism has evolved independently at least 11 times across species, driven by environmental stressors and opportunistic feeding, according to a study in *Biological Reviews*. Researchers analyzed 503 cases across 207 snake species, revealing patterns tied to ecological adaptability. Colubridae snakes (29% of reports), despite not typically preying on other snakes, exhibited cannibalism linked to food scarcity, while Viperidae (21% of cases) showed captive-driven behavior due to confinement. Elapidae, including cobras, accounted for 19% of instances, aligning with their natural predatory habits. Lead author Bruna Falcão noted this behavioral repetition highlights snakes' strategic survival tactics, challenging prior assumptions about cannibalism's rarity.
