Danish offshore wind giant Ørsted has constructed three artificial bird nests off the UK coast to support endangered kittiwake seabird populations affected by its Hornsea 3 wind project. The octagonal structures, built with contractor Red7Marine, feature 500 individual nests elevated on poles to protect breeding birds from predators and coastal development. Each nest includes research facilities allowing scientists to monitor the birds without disturbance. Hornsea 3 alone will power over three million UK households when completed by 2025, making this conservation effort critical for the project's environmental approval and social license to operate. Kittiwake populations face significant decline due to climate change and human encroachment, making these structures vital for species survival.
