Rapid Evolution Followed Dinosaur Extinction, Study Shows

Scientists have discovered that life rebounded at an astonishing pace following the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. A study led by Chris Lowery from the University of Texas, published in *Geology*, revealed that new species of plankton evolved in as little as 2,000 years. This rapid evolution rate challenges previous assumptions about the speed at which life recovers from major extinction events.

Researchers utilized Helium-3 isotope markers in ocean sediment to accurately date the emergence of new plankton species. The team examined sediment layers around the world, near the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. They found that between 10 to 20 plankton species appeared within 6,000 years of the dinosaurs' extinction. This new method provided more accurate timelines than previous methods.

This rapid recovery showcases the remarkable resilience of life in the face of catastrophic events. The study’s findings also suggest the environment began to recover quickly after the Chicxulub impact. Penn State University’s Timothy Bralower noted the recovery’s speed is “astounding.”
