Olympic figure skater Alyssa Liu has drawn attention for her 'smiley' piercing, a body modification that pierces the frenulum connecting the gums to the upper lip. The 20-year-old gold medalist, who performed the piercing herself before the 2026 Winter Games, has sparked warnings from dental professionals about the serious health risks associated with oral piercings.

Mouth piercings present unique dangers due to the millions of bacteria naturally present in our mouths, according to Colgate. The jewelry can easily become contaminated, leading to infections that may cause gum disease, receding gums, and even tooth loss. In rare cases, oral piercings can transmit serious diseases including Hepatitis B, C, D, E, and G, as well as HIV/AIDS and endocarditis, the heart valve infection.

Dental experts strongly advise against DIY piercings and recommend having the procedure performed by trained professionals using sterile instruments. Dr. Edward Liu, a cosmetic dentist, emphasizes that even with professional application, oral piercings can damage teeth through constant contact, leading to enamel erosion, chipped teeth, and impaired taste and saliva production. The risks are significant enough that dentists urge consultation before getting any oral piercing.
