NYC Mayor threatens property tax hike amid budget crisis

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani warned that without state approval to tax the wealthy, he may need to raise property taxes as a "last resort" to address the $5.4 billion budget deficit. His preferred path involves increasing taxes on the wealthy and corporations, but Governor Kathy Hochul has been lukewarm on this approach.

The mayor outlined a potential 9.5% property tax increase that would disproportionately affect middle-class New Yorkers and renters. Mamdani called this option "painful" and emphasized it's not his preferred path. The city's property tax system, unchanged since the 1970s, imposes higher rates on multi-unit buildings where renters live.

City Comptroller Mark Levine warned that relying on property tax hikes and reserve drawdowns would have "dire consequences," describing the current system as "profoundly unfair." Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis criticized the proposal as making homeownership less attainable. Mamdani stressed this remains a preliminary budget and hopes to avoid the tax increase through continued Albany negotiations.
