Sussex County health officials are investigating a gastrointestinal illness outbreak they suspect is caused by norovirus. The Sussex County Division of Health reported a surge in cases of diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting among residents who dined out in the county between January 30 and February 1.

Early findings suggest norovirus as the culprit, though environmental assessments found no issues at local food establishments. The virus causes severe symptoms including excessive vomiting and diarrhea, leading to dehydration particularly dangerous for young children and adults over 65. According to the CDC, norovirus causes 900 deaths annually, mostly among older adults.

Norovirus spreads rapidly through direct contact with infected individuals, contaminated food or surfaces, and can persist for weeks after symptoms subside. While foodborne transmission is common, this outbreak appears to be community-based rather than facility-related. The CDC reports 31 outbreaks nationwide the week of January 2, a 35% increase from the previous week, though cases remain within normal seasonal ranges.
