The Norwegian Nobel Institute has defended its selection process after President Donald Trump publicly criticized the organization for not awarding him the Peace Prize. Director Kristian Berg Harpviken told The Atlantic that the institute aims to increase transparency around its procedures to counter accusations of bias. Harpviken emphasized that the institute remains independent and will not be swayed by lobbying efforts. "A candidate who is aggressively campaigning for him or herself will neither be penalized nor privileged," he stated, noting that no officials have attempted to influence the committee directly. The institute has maintained its stance despite Trump's persistent public appeals and even receiving Machado's Peace Prize medal during a White House meeting.

Trump's fixation on the prize included threats to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, suggesting he would no longer prioritize peace considerations. Støre repeatedly reminded Trump that the Nobel Committee operates independently of government influence, emphasizing that any attempt to interfere would be unacceptable and potentially force his resignation.
