Researchers in Peru's San Martin cloud forests have identified a previously unknown frog species, dubbed "Shunku Sacha." The tiny amphibian, only 2-3 centimeters long, inhabits remote and unique ecosystems. Its discovery, however, is coupled with concerns about its survival due to deforestation and climate change impacting its fragile habitat in the Peruvian Andes.

This finding is particularly relevant because the frog's habitat, covering about 20,000 acres, faces immediate threats. Approximately 60% of the forest cover that supports the Shunku Sacha has already been lost. Expansion of agriculture, along with illegal logging, is driving these environmental challenges, endangering this newly discovered species.
