On January 30, 2026, Boeing’s MidAmerica facility in Missouri saw the MQ‑25 Stingray complete its first low‑speed taxi test. Navy pilots from VX‑23 and UX‑24 guided the drone, which autonomously maneuvered to validate ground‑handling systems. The milestone moves the program closer to a scheduled first flight early this year soon.

Despite earlier delays and rising costs, the Navy now targets a 2026 first flight, following a missed 2025 deadline. The Stingray aims to extend carrier‑based aircraft range and reduce reliance on crewed F/A‑18F Super Hornets for tanker duties, freeing those jets for combat missions in future operations and maintenance efficiency.

Design cues from the canceled UCLASS program—such as the flush inlet and inset exhaust—hint at future stealth and ISR roles. Boeing’s nine pre‑production units will undergo static, fatigue and flight tests before the Navy plans to acquire 76 drones, targeting 2027 for initial operational capability of carrier air wings soon.

Investors watch the MQ‑25 as a bellwether for U.S. defense spending and Boeing’s commercial prospects. A successful first flight could unlock new contracts and accelerate the Navy’s shift toward unmanned carrier aviation, reshaping the strategic balance in the Indo‑Pacific region.
