Minnesota is experiencing the largest outbreak of sexually transmitted ringworm in the United States, with over 30 confirmed or suspected cases of trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII reported in the Twin Cities since July 2024. The fungal infection, known as TMVII, was first identified in New York City and has been circulating in Europe and among individuals who traveled to Southeast Asia for sex tourism.

The outbreak disproportionately affects men who have sex with men, though health officials note the overall public health risk remains low. Minnesota Department of Health officials warn that diagnosing TMVII requires advanced testing, as most labs struggle to distinguish it from similar fungal infections. Patients may need weeks or months of oral medication, and health authorities specifically caution against using steroid creams, which can worsen the infection.

TMVII causes painful, itchy red rashes that can spread beyond genital areas to the face, torso, arms, and legs. The infection can lead to complications including secondary bacterial infections and scarring. Health officials recommend avoiding sexual contact if either partner has a new rash, not sharing personal items, and washing potentially contaminated items on high heat. Those with suspected infections should cover affected areas and wash hands thoroughly after contact to prevent spread.
