McDonald's Preps for GLP-1 Impact on Menu Strategy

McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski is preparing for the potential impact of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs on consumer behavior as the company faces growing adoption of medications like Wegovy. While Kempczinski told analysts the pills haven't yet materially affected business, he acknowledged that changing eating patterns are influencing menu development. The company is focusing on protein offerings, which GLP-1 users still consume.

Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill received regulatory approval in December and hit pharmacies in January, with Eli Lilly expected to launch its rival soon. The Trump administration's push to lower drug prices could accelerate adoption, eliminating the need for injections. PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta noted consumers are seeking smaller portions of favorites, describing portion control as a "key strategic bet" for the company.

McDonald's fourth-quarter results suggest the company has weathered the initial wave of GLP-1 adoption. The Golden Arches reported same-store sales growth of 5.7%, beating analyst expectations of 3.9%, with US sales up 6.8%. Promotions like the Grinch Meal and Monopoly helped drive traffic, while the McValue menu attracted cost-conscious customers. Analysts warn that the sustainability of economics for franchisees and the K-shaped economy remain concerns as GLP-1 adoption expands.
