Four Massachusetts State Police officials face criminal charges in connection with the death of recruit Enrique Delgado-Garcia during training exercises. The indictments include involuntary manslaughter and causing serious bodily injury charges against a supervisor and three instructors from the tactical unit.

Delgado-Garcia, 25, died in September 2024 after becoming unresponsive during boxing training. The investigation found he sustained multiple head injuries during unauthorized sparring sessions followed by a training match where staff failed to intervene. The supervisor faces additional perjury charges related to grand jury testimony.

Attorney General Andrea Campbell emphasized the importance of an independent investigation, while the State Police Association pledged to defend the accused members. The case has drawn attention to training safety protocols nationwide, following a decade where at least 29 recruits died during academy training across the country, often from exertion-related conditions or training-related trauma.
