MAID Controversy: Parents Fight Track 2 Euthanasia Law

The parents of 26-year-old Kiano Vafaeian are demanding changes to Canada's medical assistance in dying (MAID) laws after their son was euthanized in British Columbia on December 30, 2025. Vafaeian, who had Type 1 diabetes and a history of mental illness, became the center of controversy when his family alleged that Dr. Ellen Wiebe coached him on meeting criteria for Track 2 patients.

Vafaeian's mother, Margaret Marsilla, said her son became obsessed with MAID after losing vision in one eye in 2022. Despite initial rejection by a Toronto doctor in 2022 following a public pressure campaign, Vafaeian eventually sought out Wiebe in British Columbia. Marsilla claims Wiebe guided her son on how to present his case, leading to approval within the 90-day Track 2 timeframe. The family was not notified of the approval and only learned of his death days later.

The case has exposed significant concerns about safeguards in the current system. The family is now advocating for the repeal of the Track 2 provision and passage of Bill C-218 to restrict MAID for patients whose primary issue is mental illness. Marsilla argues that real safeguards would include mandatory family notification and comprehensive treatment options before approval, questioning how patients can be protected when euthanasia can be approved and carried out within three months.
