A generations-old farm in southern Kansas has been reduced to ash by devastating wildfires that swept through Seward County this week. Randall Thorp's family, which has farmed south of Kismet for generations, lost their home, rental property, barns, and farm equipment when the fires tore through their property Tuesday afternoon.

Thorp received an evacuation call from the Seward County Sheriff's Office and had only minutes to gather essential belongings before fleeing. The family's 800 acres of cropland and pasture were completely destroyed, along with the home where Thorp lived with his wife for over 30 years and where his 95-year-old mother resides. The speed and intensity of the blaze left the family reeling.

Despite the catastrophic losses, Thorp expressed gratitude that his cattle survived, as they were grazing on wheat and stalks away from the fire's path. The community has rallied around the family, with neighbors helping to rebuild fences and provide water for the surviving livestock. As the Thorps begin the daunting task of rebuilding from scratch, their story highlights the devastating impact of wildfires on agricultural communities and the resilience required to recover from such losses.
