Jieworui Gold Platform Collapse Leaves 150k Investors Reeling

Jieworui, a Shenzhen-based gold trading platform, has collapsed, leaving over 150,000 investors facing steep losses after it offered pennies on the dollar in repayment. The platform operated as an unlicensed leveraged betting service with no physical gold backing, attracting retail investors with promises of high returns and zero fees.

The failure stems from flawed mechanics akin to unregulated options trading, with leverage up to 40x. When gold prices surged, Jieworui couldn't cover its liabilities. Withdrawals were halted in late January, triggering protests at its Shenzhen office. Most victims are individual investors with limited financial sophistication.

Repayment plans offer as little as 6% of invested funds, far below the already low advertised rates. Investors must also sign agreements waiving future legal claims, sparking outrage. Many are refusing the terms, opting instead to pursue independent legal action amid doubts about actual payouts.

The collapse is part of a broader trend affecting similar platforms in China, underscoring weak oversight in the digital asset and retail investment space. Regulators are under pressure to address systemic risks posed by such unregulated schemes targeting everyday investors.
