Iranian Drones Transform Gulf Warfare After Ukraine Success

Iranian-designed Shahed drones have evolved from a key Russian weapon in Ukraine to a strategic threat across the Persian Gulf. Following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, Tehran has launched hundreds of these cheap but effective weapons at targets in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, demonstrating their expanded operational range and destructive potential.

These drones cost only tens of thousands of dollars compared to millions for ballistic missiles, yet can carry 40 kilograms of explosives and strike targets up to 2,000 kilometers away. Russian forces have produced hundreds in single attacks, overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses and forcing costly Western-supplied missile intercepts. The drones' distinctive buzz has earned them the Ukrainian nickname "mopeds" while proving their ability to saturate defenses.

Security experts note the Shahed's combination of persistence, precision, and low cost has transformed modern warfare. Patrick Bury of the University of Bath observed that the scale of Iran's retaliation surprised many observers. With U.S. and Israeli air defenses intercepting most ballistic missiles but struggling against drone swarms, military analysts suggest Ukraine's defensive experience could provide valuable lessons for protecting Gulf infrastructure from these increasingly sophisticated threats.
