India Exports Jet Fuel to Europe Amidst Russian Oil Ban

Following the European Union's ban on products derived from Russian oil, India has shipped its first jet fuel cargo to Europe. Reliance Industries offloaded approximately 390,000 barrels of jet fuel in Italy. This move comes as the EU seeks to curb Moscow's oil revenues used to fund the war in Ukraine, creating new trade dynamics.

India has become a major buyer of discounted Russian crude. Last year, India's jet fuel exports to Europe nearly tripled compared to 2021, accounting for almost 15% of Europe's aviation fuel imports. Reliance stated it stopped processing Russian crude at its export-oriented facility, ensuring compliance with the new regulations.

The Aframax tanker, chartered by Reliance, had been waiting before offloading its cargo. Reliance is providing written declarations to European buyers that its exported fuels aren't produced using Russian crude. Analysts expect Reliance to explore workarounds, such as FOB sales, to navigate the evolving market.

Only one other Indian jet fuel shipment is currently bound for Europe. The EU's ban is reshaping global energy flows. As Western nations move away from Russian energy, India's role as a fuel supplier to Europe will likely continue to grow, potentially impacting global fuel prices and trading patterns.
