Illinois lawmakers are sharply divided over Governor J.B. Pritzker's budget address, with Senate President Don Harmon praising the governor's commitment to education funding and college grants. Harmon emphasized shared priorities in continuing to invest in public education, calling Pritzker's proposals a positive step for the state's future.

State Sen. Terri Bryant challenged the governor's economic claims, noting that while Illinois' gross domestic product grew from $881 billion to over $1.2 trillion, this represents only a 4% increase compared to over 40% nationwide. Bryant criticized Pritzker for emphasizing dollar amounts rather than percentages in his economic assessment.

The debate intensified as Republican lawmakers accused Pritzker of making life more expensive for Illinois residents. State Rep. Adam Niemerg claimed the average employee's salary has decreased 21% since Pritzker took office, while utility bills have increased 83%. Meanwhile, House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch joined Pritzker in criticizing the Trump administration's tariff policies, arguing they burden working families and small businesses.
