Illinois lawmakers are pushing legislation that would require service providers to give customers a two-hour appointment window before arrival. Senator Christopher Belt filed SB 3066 to address widespread consumer frustration with vague scheduling windows that often stretch five hours or more.

Under the proposed bill, companies that miss their appointment window must notify customers an hour before arrival. The measure also prevents service providers from charging additional fees if residents aren't home when technicians arrive, protecting consumers from unexpected charges.

The legislation amends the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act, originally enacted in 1967. Senator Belt said he filed the bill after months of hearing complaints about service industry practices, where companies refuse to narrow down arrival times and sometimes charge fees when consumers aren't present.

The Illinois Senate Judiciary Committee will review the bill on Wednesday. If passed, the measure would establish clear accountability standards for service providers while safeguarding consumer interests in scheduling and fee practices.
