In Oshkosh, Wis., SUNK Dive and Ice Service has become a vital resource for recovering vehicles that fall through the ice on Lake Winnebago. Founded in 1980 by Don Herman, the business began as neighbors assisting each other and has since evolved into a specialized operation. Don, who has spent over four decades pulling ATVs, trucks, and even airplanes from the lake, emphasizes that no ice is completely safe.

Using homemade equipment, his team assesses ice thickness, plans retrievals, and employs portable winches to recover submerged vehicles. Recovery costs range from $3,000 to $12,000 depending on depth and complexity. Over the years, the crew has salvaged semis, helicopters, and other vehicles, with 17 recoveries reported this year alone.

Despite the risks, Don’s message remains clear: caution is paramount as warm temperatures weaken ice conditions.
