Fukushima's Radioactive Pig-Boar Hybrids Reveal Genetic Secrets

Japanese scientists have uncovered the genetic mechanisms behind radioactive pig-boar hybrids thriving in Fukushima’s evacuation zone. After the 2011 nuclear disaster, domestic pigs interbred with wild boar, creating hybrids that persist despite high radiation levels. Researchers analyzed DNA from 191 wild boars and 10 domestic pigs, revealing that maternal mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from domestic pigs remained detectable for up to five generations.

This rapid dilution of domestic genes contrasts with the hybrids’ continued reproductive success, which mirrors wild boar breeding patterns. The study highlights how maternal lineage accelerates genetic turnover, offering insights into managing invasive species globally. Fukushima’s unique environment has become a natural laboratory for understanding hybridization dynamics, with implications for ecological damage control strategies.
