ERC, a German aerospace firm, has completed the first public test flight of its electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft in Erding, Germany. The aircraft, designed to take off like a helicopter and fly like a plane, successfully demonstrated its capabilities on February 6, 2026.

CEO Maximilian Oligschlaeger emphasized the aircraft's potential to revolutionize critical missions, particularly medical transport, where 98% of patient transfers currently rely on ground transportation due to helicopter scarcity. The company is targeting military logistics, firefighting, and cargo flights to islands, with DRF Luftrettung identifying hospital-to-hospital patient transport as the primary medical application.

The aircraft addresses key limitations through innovation. While battery constraints limit pure electric versions, ERC plans to offer a hybrid model where a combustion engine recharges batteries during flight, extending range to approximately 800 kilometers. This approach makes operations cheaper than traditional helicopters while maintaining speed advantages over ground ambulances.

Despite broader financial challenges in the eVTOL sector, ERC reports strong funding from its parent company IABG, which has invested a significant double-digit-million-euro sum. The successful test flight positions ERC as a serious contender in the evolving electric aviation market, potentially transforming how critical missions are conducted across multiple sectors.
