E-ZPass Phase-Out: Sticker Tags Replace Windshield Transponders

Massachusetts is phasing out traditional hard-case E-ZPass transponders in favor of low-cost windshield sticker tags, a move that could save the state millions annually. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) confirmed it began issuing RFID sticker tags to new customers and for replacements starting in early March 2026. These stickers adhere directly to the inside of vehicle windshields and perform the same toll-reading function as the plastic devices.

MassDOT Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver told WBUR the stickers cost about 55 cents each, compared to roughly $6 to $7 per traditional transponder. This dramatic cost difference represents a significant long-term savings opportunity for the state's transportation budget. Current plastic transponders will continue working, meaning drivers are not required to swap them out immediately.

The transition reflects broader efforts to reduce operational costs in toll collection systems. While some states like New Jersey are considering similar programs, this remains a state-by-state decision within the E-ZPass consortium. The technology still works seamlessly with Massachusetts' all-electronic tolling system, ensuring uninterrupted service for drivers while modernizing the state's toll collection infrastructure.
