Disney Outlet Store Closure Hits Florida Shoppers

Disney's Character Warehouse at Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, Florida, is set to close permanently on April 15 after the company declined to renew its lease. The outlet, which sold discounted Disney Parks merchandise at 50-70% off, was the only Character Warehouse location in South Florida, serving shoppers from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and cruise port visitors.

Disney has been reducing its brick-and-mortar retail presence, closing many mall-based Disney Stores in 2021 as part of a shift toward park-based retail and e-commerce. The Sunrise location's closure follows similar strategic moves, with Disney prioritizing in-park and cruise ship purchases over distant outlet locations. Rising mall rents and competition from online resellers have made maintaining these outlets less attractive.

The closure leaves South Florida shoppers without a local option for discounted Disney merchandise, forcing them to travel to Orlando's Premium Outlets for similar deals. Disney's Experiences segment, which includes parks, cruises, hotels, and consumer products, continues to drive the company's profitability, generating roughly 70% of operating income despite representing only a third to two-fifths of total revenue.
