Havana workers are installing solar panels on rooftops as Cubans turn to alternative energy amid worsening power outages and fuel shortages. The shift comes after the U.S. restricted oil shipments to Cuba, including from key supplier Venezuela. Installer Raydel Cano reports growing demand from both homes and businesses seeking to avoid electricity consumption limits.

Before the solar boom, many Cubans relied on diesel generators, but diesel fuel has become increasingly scarce. Cafe owner Dariem Soto-Navarro switched to solar after struggling to obtain fuel for his generator. The energy crisis has sparked creative solutions across the island, with some Cubans mounting panels on vehicles to extend their range and reduce fuel dependence.

Rickshaw driver Alejandro Arritola mounted a solar panel on his vehicle eight to ten months ago, helping him avoid gasoline use during power outages. He says his innovation has inspired others to adopt similar solutions. As Cuba's energy crisis deepens, solar power has emerged as a practical alternative, transforming how Cubans power their homes, businesses, and even transportation.
