Cuba is implementing fuel rationing to protect essential services following the U.S.'s tightening of its oil supply blockade. The communist government aims to safeguard key sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and education. This move comes after President Trump threatened tariffs on any nation exporting fuel to Cuba, exacerbating existing shortages of food and medicine.

Commerce Minister Oscar Perez-Oliva stated the government's resolve, emphasizing the need to secure foreign exchange through tourism and exports, including Cuba's famous cigars. Domestic and international air travel won't be immediately affected, although drivers will face cutbacks. The government also plans to protect ports and ensure fuel for domestic transportation.

Plans include planting 200,000 hectares of rice and a shift towards renewable energy and animal power. While infant care centers and primary schools will remain open, secondary schools and higher education will adopt a hybrid system. Healthcare, particularly emergency services and cancer programs, will also be prioritized.

This situation reflects the ongoing economic tensions between the U.S. and Cuba. The U.S. has maintained a trade embargo on Cuba for decades, and these recent actions are aimed at further isolating the island nation by restricting its access to vital resources like fuel, impacting the Cuban economy.
