California Highway Patrol Officer Miguel Cano died in July after ingesting fentanyl while on duty, according to an L.A. County medical examiner's report. The 34-year-old officer from Moreno Valley had administered Narcan to a DUI suspect experiencing a possible overdose before suddenly feeling unwell and crashing his patrol car into a tree.

Cano was driving with his partner and the suspect to the West L.A. CHP office around 12:30 a.m. when he told his partner he didn't feel well. The vehicle went off the roadway, and Cano was pronounced dead at UCLA Medical Center about an hour later. The suspect and other officer survived without severe injury.

Initial investigations by the CHP had ruled out drug exposure, with Commissioner Sean Duryee stating in July that neither the other officer nor the suspect showed any signs of exposure. However, the medical examiner's findings now reveal fentanyl as the cause of death, though exactly how Cano ingested the lethal dose remains unclear. The incident marks the first line-of-duty death for the CHP since 2020 and has raised concerns about officer safety when responding to drug-related emergencies.
