China's Lunar New Year travel rush has begun with authorities projecting a record 9.5 billion trips during the 40-day period surrounding the February 17 festival. The massive migration, known as "chunyun," sees hundreds of millions of workers returning to their hometowns for the country's most important holiday.

At Beijing railway stations, travelers packed concourses with luggage while snacking on instant noodles, taking advantage of free hot water stations. Construction worker Liu Zhiquan exemplified the economic pressures driving travel choices, opting for a 30-hour train journey to Chengdu over a nine-hour high-speed option that costs more than twice as much. The government expects 540 million trips by train and 95 million by air during the holiday period.

For many Chinese workers facing long hours and limited annual leave, the Lunar New Year represents their only extended break to reunite with family. Young professionals like Tian Duofu, who recently began working in Beijing, noted the increasing difficulty of gathering extended families as work demands grow. The festival's significance extends beyond mere travel statistics, serving as a rare opportunity for millions to maintain family connections in a rapidly changing economy.
