ChatGPT Retirement Plan Fails Math Test, Financial Planner Warns

A financial planner reviewed ChatGPT's retirement plan for a $100,000 annual income and found critical mathematical errors that could leave retirees short millions. Eric Franklin, CFP at Prospero Wealth, analyzed the AI-generated plan for a 40-year-old earning $125,000 who wants to retire at 65 in Tennessee.

ChatGPT suggested saving $2.5 million using the 4% withdrawal rule, but failed to account for inflation over 25 years. Franklin calculated the retiree would actually need $5.2 million in future dollars to maintain today's purchasing power. The AI also underestimated required savings by over half a million dollars, using overly optimistic 6% real return assumptions.

The review reveals dangerous limitations of using AI for complex financial planning. While ChatGPT's initial output appeared realistic, deeper analysis exposed fundamental flaws in its calculations and assumptions. Franklin warns that following such a plan would lead to both mathematical and psychological failure, as real-life changes inevitably require adjustments that AI cannot anticipate.
