Carnegie Mellon's TartanPest Robot Targets Invasive Lanternflies

Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science has developed TartanPest, an autonomous robot designed to combat the invasive spotted lanternfly. The robot uses artificial intelligence to identify and remove egg masses from trees before they hatch, offering a promising solution to a growing agricultural threat.

The spotted lanternfly, which has spread across the eastern United States since 2014, threatens over 100 species of trees and plants. In Pennsylvania alone, the pest could cost $324 million annually and result in the loss of approximately 2,800 jobs. The insects feed on valuable crops without harming humans or animals, making them particularly destructive to the grape and logging industries.

TartanPest employs machine learning and computer vision to detect lanternfly eggs, comparing images from a crowdsourced database to identify nests. The robot's arm then scrapes off egg masses, preventing the next generation from hatching. According to the research team, this approach increases farm efficiency, reduces pesticide use, and lowers labor costs. By targeting eggs before they hatch, the robot offers a more effective solution than manual nest removal or adult pest control.
