Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged de-escalation in the Iran conflict while meeting in Canberra. The leaders discussed the crisis following reports of a U.S. submarine sinking an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean and Turkey intercepting a ballistic missile launched from Iran.

Both leaders stressed that de-escalation cannot succeed without preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Carney emphasized that Iran must end its nuclear ambitions and terrorism exports, while calling for the Gulf Cooperation Council's involvement in the peace process. Albanese highlighted attacks on civilian areas in Gulf states and stressed the need to permanently eliminate Iran's nuclear capabilities.

When questioned about potential Canadian military involvement, Carney declined to rule it out completely, noting that participation decisions depend on how the conflict evolves. The meeting occurred during Carney's trade-focused visit to Australia, which included addressing the Australian Parliament before continuing to Japan.
