Brazil Beef Boom as China Fuels Record Processing

Brazil's cattle processing hit record levels in 2025, with 42.3 million head slaughtered as the country surpassed the United States as the world's largest beef producer. The 13.1% quarterly increase from 2024 reflects booming demand from China, which imported nearly $650 million worth of Brazilian beef in January alone, 45% more than the previous year.

Brazilian beef exports generated $1.3 billion revenue in 2025, with China accounting for approximately half of total trade by value and volume. However, China's introduction of annual import quotas and a 55% tariff on excess shipments has created uncertainty. Beijing exempted 1.106 million metric tons from additional tariffs this year, compared to the nearly 140,000 tons monthly Brazil exported to China in 2025.

The Brazilian government now discusses allocating company-specific quotas based on 2025 export volumes to prevent market distortions. While defenders argue this approach could stabilize cattle prices and prevent a rush to fill quotas, critics warn of unprecedented government interference in food exports. The quota system aims to balance trade relations while protecting Brazil's beef industry from sudden policy shifts.
