Bird Flu Decimates Antarctic Skuas in First Mass Die-off

A team of international researchers has documented the first mass die-off of Antarctic skuas due to H5N1 avian influenza, with over 50 birds perishing during the 2023-2024 summers. The study, published in Scientific Reports, confirms the highly pathogenic virus has reached Antarctica's most remote regions, including the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula.

Researchers from Erasmus MC and UC Davis collected wildlife samples during expeditions to multiple Antarctic sites, finding the virus present across all locations. While skuas suffered mass mortality, other species like fur seals tested positive for the virus but their deaths weren't directly attributed to it. Ralph Vanstreels, co-senior author from UC Davis, described the crisis as birds falling from the sky and wandering aimlessly as the virus attacked their brains.

The outbreak represents a significant ecological threat, as skuas serve as crucial scavengers in Antarctica's fragile ecosystem. The virus, first identified in China in 1996, has now spread globally, with researchers warning that once it entered wild bird populations, control became impossible. The study's authors emphasize the need for enhanced global surveillance and preventive measures to track avian flu in Antarctica before it potentially spreads to vulnerable penguin populations.
