American Airlines announced a $5 increase in second checked bag fees for domestic flights, bringing the cost to $50 when paid at the airport for bookings made after Feb. 18, 2026. The move continues the airline's strategy of unbundling services that were once included in ticket prices, though first checked bag fees remain unchanged at $35 prepaid online or $40 at the airport.

The fee hike reflects a broader industry trend. In 2024, American, JetBlue, and Alaska Airlines all raised checked bag costs by as much as 30%. JetBlue increased fees from $35 to $45 for bags checked within 24 hours of departure, while Alaska raised first-bag fees from $30 to $35 and second-bag fees from $40 to $45.

Travelers can avoid the new fee by purchasing tickets and checking bags online well in advance of their travel dates. The industry's focus on ancillary revenue comes as airlines face pressure to boost profits amid rising operational costs, with baggage fees now representing a significant income stream beyond ticket sales.
