Tiny PM2.5 particles caused over 500,000 deaths across Europe in 2021, with European Environment Agency researchers identifying air pollution as the continent's top environmental health threat. The World Health Organization's recommended limits for PM2.5 exposure were exceeded, contributing to approximately 253,000 premature deaths.

While the EU has made progress, reducing PM2.5-related early deaths by 41% between 2005 and 2021, air pollution continues to devastate quality of life. The researchers found that PM2.5 pollution costs the EU population suffering from asthma, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 150,000 years of life and an equal number of years of disability.

EU Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius emphasized that clean air policies are working, with measurable improvements through clean energy transitions and electric vehicle adoption. However, he stressed that pollution levels must be reduced further. The EU has voted to align air quality standards with WHO recommendations by 2035, though the continent continues pushing major solar and offshore wind projects while incentivizing electric car adoption through tax credits and other measures.
